The Great Buck Howard Grade: C+ (Rent it) Review: The character Buck Howard is inspired by the 1970s mentalist The Amazing Kreskin. Interesting character, good acting by John Malkovich. Worth to rent.
I love movies and my former coworkers guilted me in sacrificing some time for people that I've grown to care about. My time is limited so my reviews are going to be short and to the point.
Why should you care about my movie review?
1. Unlike movie critics I don't get paid by any studio, network or publication. You can expect brutal honesty and integrity. 2. Unlike regular user reviews I tend not to conform even when it is trendy and popular. 3. A motion picture is an art form, but for us mortals it is only two hours of entertainment (not that artistic part is not important). 4. I assure you that if I grade something B- or higher it is worth watching it.
Methodology in rating movies
I have a practical approach on rating movies. When I leave the movie theater among other stuff I ask myself: 1. Was I entertained? Was there a point? 2. Was it worth my time (and the overpriced $12.50)? 3. Did it have any memorable dialog? 4. If it was a comedy, how much did I laugh (I am surprised how many times I was told a comedy was good but when I asked were there a lot of laughs I got blank stares). 5. If it was a scary movie, was it really scary. 6. Was it an original idea or at least original approach to some old plot? There are many other dimensions that I consider but they are all practical with a sole goal of having full confidence and credibility of giving something thumbs-up.
Will this methodology lead to a lot of bad grades? YES!!! But have you seen how much junk is getting produced. If you want to save some time and money read my reviews.
